Trump Organization Faces Criminal Charges

On July 1, chief financial officer for the Trump Organization, Allen Weisselberg, turned himself in to the New York state authorities. He was charged with hiding $1.7 million (W1.9 billion) worth of income. The Trump Organization is the holding company that owns hotels, golf clubs, commercial properties, and other assets on behalf of the Trump family's brand name. It is the cornerstone of the Trump family's organization and oversees almost all of the family's business dealings.

Prosecutors claim that there was a 15-year-long scheme to help the organization's executives avoid taxes by dolling out benefits such as rent and school tuition, which are not necessarily monitored by the Inland Revenue Service (IRS), the United States' tax authority. Lawyers for the organization and for Weisselberg have pleaded not guilty to the charge. While no charges were brought up against the former president himself, the charges could have massive implications for not only his business, but also for his personal and political life. Legal experts expect that during the court proceedings, vital documents, such as his personal tax statements, will become public. Trump refused to release these during his political run and presidency, as he and others close to the organization could be forced to reveal potentially embarrassing and damning information.

Many of the Republican Party's members and supporters have claimed that the action is a “political move” to smear Trump's name and ruin any future political endeavors. However, the prosecutors have rebutted, claiming that they are operating perfectly within the state's reach and that they are not fueled by political ambitions.
