Listening for the Amphibian Apocalypse

The “sixth mass extinction” is the name that scientists have given to what they expect to be the next oncoming wave of extinction to tear across the planet due to the severity of climate change. Soundscape ecologist Bryan Pijanowski said that the next extinction will affect many different types of species. “The best way to envision the sixth mass extinction is to look outside and then just imagine that three out of every four of the species that were common out there are gone.”

Bryan Pijanowski's role as a soundscape ecologist may be something that you have never heard of before. Essentially, Bryan works with high-tech microphones in a diverse range of settings to see what the sounds of those different settings can tell us about what is happening to the environment. Currently, Bryan is focusing his work on amphibians, who he mentions are more at risk than other animals, as already more than 40 percent of amphibians are nearing extinction. This is a higher rate than any other vertebrate.

“In the past 30 years or so, we've seen really dramatic, really rapid extinctions for frog populations all over the world,” said Steven Whitfield, a conservation ecologist at Zoo Miami and Pijanowski's research partner. “Many of these extinctions are due to habitat loss. But, other extinctions have occurred in pristine rainforests like this – places that look healthy, but the frogs are telling us there's something clearly wrong,” he said. The microphones are used to try to find the reasons why.

Bryan and his partner usually trek far into the rainforest, rope off a designated area, and set up some 30 different microphones. They count and identify all of the frogs that they can and then start to record their sounds.
