It is undeniable that David Hockney is one of the U.K.'s most loved and respected artists. For more than 60 years, Hockney has mesmerized countless people with his innovative art, which is characterized by its bold colors. When Hockney's fans are asked to think of his most impressive painting, many would think of the oil painting titled My Parents.
Completed in 1977, My Parents is a full-length portrait of Hockney's parents, Kenneth and Laura Hockney. Hockney produced this painting after he made two failed attempts at painting a portrait of his parents. One of the most interesting characteristics of the painting is that Kenneth and Laura are striking completely different poses as models. Interestingly, Hockney's sister, Margaret, said that Kenneth and Laura's poses reflect their different personalities. With Laura sitting straight and looking directly at the viewer, we can guess how sincere she was while modelling. On the other hand, Kenneth is showing his profile and leaning over to read something in a very relaxed pose. With this depiction, we can assume how much fidgeting must have been going on while he sat for the portrait.
