Conflict Begins Again in Gaza
After months of intense conflict, skyrocketing casualty numbers, and immense international pressure, leaders from both Israel and Palestine made a ceasefire agreement. The ceasefire agreement was universally praised as leaders from around the world applauded the efforts of the two nations to engage in dialogue instead of warfare. However, the ceasefire caused quite a political uproar within the respective nations as well. Longtime Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was voted out in a shocking political move by more conservative members of the Israeli parliament.
However, while the ceasefire provided a glimmer of hope and promise for a new beginning, it was short lived. In one short month after the ceasefire, hostile warlike activities reignited in the very unstable and fragile region. Last week, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attacked Gaza twice. The IDF targeted what they said were Hamas military complexes and meeting locations for different military organizations active in Gaza. Reportedly, these strikes were in direct response to incendiary balloon attacks, which have sparked 20 different fires across Israel. Incendiary balloons are quite simple, yet dangerously effective weapons. They are helium balloons that resemble a child's birthday balloon, but have dangerous explosives attached. The balloons are launched into the air and winds from the Mediterranean Sea help carry these balloons from Gaza into Israel.
The latest round of targeted attacks seem to have put a pause on this most recent round of warfare, as neither side has sent attacks since. However, the area remains very fragile and the slightest miscalculation by leadership on either side could send the area into an even bloodier and more costly conflict.
