Famine Hits Ethiopia During Civil War

Ethiopia, an East African nation, has been in the midst of a civil war for months. The government of Ethiopia has sent troops into a northern region of the country called Tigray, which is home to the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). The TPLF is a military organization who has been fighting with the Ethiopian government since the end of last year. Part of the warfare has involved the Ethiopian military blocking critical roads, trade routes, and supply lines into the region. A recently released report by the United Nations and other aid groups stated that over 350,000 people in the conflict-ravaged area are experiencing dire hunger. United Nations aid chief, Mark Lowcock warned, “There is famine in Ethiopia right now.”

According to the global Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a globally recognized system to measure food insecurity and malnutrition, large parts of the Tigray region are in an “IPC 5, Catastrophe” status, which is the most severe rating. Additionally, as of May 2021, a total of 5.5 million people from Tigray and neighboring regions are suffering from “high levels of acute food insecurity.”

The report found that the crisis has resulted from “cascading effects of conflict, including population displacements, movement restrictions, limited humanitarian access, loss of harvest, and livelihood assets, and dysfunctional or non-existent markets.” A number of reports have released information demonstrating that Ethiopian troops, in coordination with Eritrean troops, are actively cutting off critical aid routes that can be used to deliver much-needed supplies.

After the Ethiopian government postponed a local election in the Tigray region, which is home to the majority of the opposition party's members, conflict broke out in November last year. Since then, millions have been displaced, and fighting is expected to continue.
