A Bigger Splash

Born in Bradford in 1937, David Hockney is one of the most influential British artists and has contributed a lot to 20th-century art. His artistry has no limits. Not only is he a painter, but he is also a printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. One of the biggest achievements of his career is his contribution to the pop art movement in the 1960s that focused on depicting commonplace objects, like books, food cans, and newspapers, using bright colors.

Among the myriad of paintings that Hockney has created, A Bigger Splash, created in 1967, earned him great fame as an artist. It is one of three of his paintings that depict a relaxing day in California. The other two of them are The Splash and A Little Splash. In 1963, a year after graduating from one of the world's most prestigious institutions of art and design, Royal College of Art, Hockney first traveled to California. From the first time he visited the American state, he was drawn in by how people there lived a very relaxed life. He also realized that most people in the state had a swimming pool, which was something rare to see in his hometown in the U.K. where the weather was cold and cloudy all year round. Countless art fanatics around the world believe that the painting is summery and makes the viewer feel cool just by looking at it. As we can guess from the title, the painting depicts a swimming pool with a big splash splattering out from the water. It looks like someone has just dived into the swimming pool from a diving board. Moreover, refreshing colors like blue were mostly used in the painting.
