China Sends Astronauts to New Space Station

On June 17, China successfully launched a team of three astronauts into space. The three astronauts' names are Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming, and Tang Hongbo. They are expected to spend three months on the Tianhe module, which is located at 380 km above Earth. In terms of time, this is China's longest crewed space mission to date and the first in nearly five years. The successful launch from China's launch center, located in the Gobi desert, is another prime example of China's growing technological prowess as the nation becomes more confident and capable in the space domain. In the past six months, China has recovered rock and soil samples from the moon and landed a six-wheeled robot on Mars. These are both complex and extremely challenging tasks.

The main goal for the astronauts will be to put the 22.5-ton Tianhe module into operation. “Tianhe,” which means “harmony of the heavens,” was launched into space in April of this year. The module has space for three residents and will allow the team to conduct tests, collect samples, and learn more about space.

Chinese authorities kept the identities of the astronauts a secret until a press conference last Wednesday, when the background and track records of each astronaut were released. Nie Haisheng, 56, is China's oldest astronaut in space. He is experienced, with two previous flights under his belt. Liu Boming, 54, and Tang Hongbo, 45, both have air force backgrounds. Liu Boming was the first Chinese national to conduct a spacewalk and Tang Hongbo is the only one of the three that does not have any space experience.
