Exoplanet Could Have Water Clouds

 Recently, scientists have discovered an exoplanet that could contain water clouds. Exoplanets are planets that are located outside of our solar system. While students are often taught that there are eight planets, there are actually many more. But, these additional planets are outside of our solar system and are thus, often forgotten about. These planets, like the planets in our solar system, also revolve around their own star or sunlike gaseous structures, which form their own solar systems.

 This exoplanet is called TOI-1231 b and it is located 90 light years away from Earth. It completes a full orbit around its star every 24 Earth days. Its star is an M-type, or red dwarf star, named NLTT 24399. It is smaller and dimmer than stars like our sun. Scientists know that the exoplanet orbits its star every 24 days, which makes it much closer to its star than we are to our star. Usually being placed closer to a star makes a planet much hotter than Earth, but because NLTT 24399 is smaller and dimmer, TOI-1231 b has an atmosphere that is somewhat closer to ours.

 Scientists believe that TOI-1231 b's atmosphere is thick, gaseous, and probably full of water vapor. They also believe that the surface temperature is roughly 60 degrees Celsius, which is certainly hot in comparison to Earth, but is considered colder than most exoplanets and other planets in general. In 2015, scientists found an exoplanet with very similar features to TOI-1231 b. This planet, known as K2-18 b, was found to have water in its atmosphere, which is why scientists are hopeful about TOI-1231 b.
