Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh gained the respect of numerous painters and art fanatics around the world not only for his exceptional artistic skills, but also for the staggering number of artworks that he produced during his lifetime. Van Gogh created more than 2,100 artworks, consisting of more than 800 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolor paintings. As Van Gogh suffered from a severe mental illness during his lifetime, he produced a myriad of paintings that revolved around the themes of anxiety, loneliness, and depression. However, Van Gogh also created many paintings with hopeful messages, and the oil painting titled Almond Blossom is one great example.

Completed in February 1890, Almond Blossom portrays beautiful almond flowers, one of Van Gogh's favorite subjects to paint, blossomed on sprigs against the background of a blue sky. The sky was painted using many different shades of blue to make it look real. Van Gogh created the painting as a commemorative gift for his brother Theo's newborn son named Vincent Willem van Gogh. The boy was named after Van Gogh with the hope that he would grow as determined and courageous as his uncle. The news announcing the birth of Willem led Van Gogh to have an immediate mood change, despite having already been hospitalized at an asylum in the French commune of Saint-Remy for around 10 months at the time. Moreover, because of the severity of his illness, Van Gogh was even given orders from his doctors not to go outside to engage in painting. To this day, many art experts are confident that the painting must have been the perfect gift to present to Theo, as almond blossoms, which flower in spring, symbolize the start of new life.

Almond Blossom is currently housed at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
